My favorite songs of 2017: Part 3

Here it is, my third and final mix of my favorite songs from 2017 (For now anyway).

Whereas the first mix was mostly energetic songs about feeling beaten down or not being good enough, and the second mix was primarily mid-tempo or acoustic songs about feeling beaten down or missing people and places, this one kind of breaks that narrative, and is all over the place.

Sure, I start this mix with Kamikaze Girls' "I Don't Want to Be Sad Forever" which sets a bit of a downer tone. Then chorus of Cayetana's "Too Old for This" describes how I felt for essentially the entire month of September, and then again in December (for the uninitiated, the chorus is "I don't want to think about this or you anymore"), and of course, "Leaving" by Freya Wilcox is a real doozy. But this mix also has some of the heaviest songs in terms of pure sound and aggression (PEARS, Limp Wrist, and Direct Hit! all in a row), to the point where I wasn't sure if I could make them fit into any of my mixes organically.

And, to top it off, there are also a bunch of songs from albums that I really wanted to like but got lost in the shuffle of having so many things going on (Hard Girls, Blondie, The Flatliners, Great Cynics, and the aforementioned Kamikaze Girls). The whole albums might not have stuck, but at the very least these are the songs that left strong impressions on me.

via Amazon . I didn't realize how long it's been since I've written anything. That's on me. CDs Revisited: Sugarcult - 'Back to the Disaster'

Okay, so technically this is a DVD that happens to come packaged with a CD. I've only watched the DVD once since getting this, but I remember listening to the CD half frequently enough to warrant its inclusion in this project. (Also the packaging is in a jewel case made for a CD so I jotted this release down before fully remembering that the live album is the supplementary half) I got this my junior year of high school. It was a Secret Santa gift from someone who was on the student government with me. I recently found out that this girl and I are no longer Facebook friends and I have no idea when that happened. Anyway, the summer of that same year I had been listening to Start Static  a lot, so of course I was happy to accept a gift that had live renditions of some of my favorite songs. CDs Revisited: Reel Big Fish - 'Cheer Up'

Here's a fact about me: Every time that I am aware of a Reel Big Fish show in New York City, I attend it. It doesn't really matter what else is going on- if they're playing nearby and I know about it (and thanks to constant spam emails from various concert venues and online ticket vendors, I almost always know), I'm there. Every time. Here's another fact about me: I don't listen to Reel Big Fish's albums anymore. I just can't do it. A stray song might pop up on shuffle and I can make it through, but putting on a whole album is just too much for me. I don't think that lot of it has aged well, and if I'm going to find myself listening to a 90's ska punk band, I prefer to listen to bands that take it a bit more seriously. Even for this entry it's been difficult for me to sit down and listen to the whole album in a single sitting. Which is funny, because I don't even think it's that bad.
